Product Info

The British Railways Standard 9F Class was a 2-10-0 steam locomotive, representing the last of the standardized BR designs. Designed by Robert Riddles for long-distance heavy express freight, a total of 251 locomotives were produced between January 1954 and March 1960. The final locomotive, No. 92220 ‘Evening Star,’ marked the last steam locomotive built by British Railways.

The large length of the 10 coupled driving wheels created challenges on tight curves, which were inevitable for freight operations. This was addressed by removing the flanges from the center driving wheel and reducing the flange size on the second and fourth driving axles.

Riddles chose the 2-10-0 wheel configuration to distribute the load of the boiler over a larger area. Consequently, the boiler had to be raised compared to other designs to allow the firebox to sit above the trailing driving wheels, resulting in a distinctive void between the suspended boiler and the footplate.

The class proved extremely versatile, excelling not only as a freight locomotive but also performing well as a passenger locomotive. Reports indicate that when 92220 ‘Evening Star’ pulled the Red Dragon express service, it had to delay its arrival to allow restaurant services to complete, outpacing the normal Britannia Class locomotives.

Locomotive numbers 92165-92167 were built with a mechanical stoker, using a helical screw to move coal from the tender directly into the firebox. While beneficial on long-distance American railways, such systems were rare in Britain, where a skilled fireman could maintain adequate coal delivery.

Locomotive 92002, the third built by BR in 1954 at Crewe, was outshopped with the BR1G tender in the standard BR black livery. It was one of the 106 locomotives withdrawn in 1967 and was not preserved.

The new 9F model features a fully diecast boiler and chassis for added weight, enhancing its pulling power to reflect that of the prototype. The models come in authentic service colors, complete with detailed painted cabs, posed crew figures, and a flickering firebox feature for illumination.
