Bachmann Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0ST ‘Alice’ Dinorwic Quarry Red [NG7 Gauge]
Item No: 71-025SF
Built in 1902 as works number 780 and christened ‘Alice’—the locomotive that lent its name to the Alice Class—this Quarry Hunslet served on the steep inclined galleries of Dinorwic Quarry, Wales, until 1960, its angled frames preventing bottoming on the quarry’s challenging gradients. After decades of abandonment, ‘Alice’ was rescued, restored, and now resides at the Bala Lake Railway alongside fellow Hunslets. Dapol’s NG7 scale rendition faithfully captures every nuance of the prototype, with an open cab, dumb buffers (two lengths supplied), angled frames, short chimney, riveted water tank, backhead injectors, Ramsbottom safety valve, single smokebox-mounted lubricator, left-side blower feed, and tank-mounted tool rests. The model sits on a diecast metal chassis and gearbox driving 5 mm O-16.5 wheels with authentic profile, all running in separate metal bearings and picking up power from every axle. A coreless motor, Super Creep gearing, and prototypical wheelbase enable smooth slow-speed operation and reliable haulage on first-radius curves. Precision-molded plastic bodywork, metal-framed valve gear, and separately fitted details—handrails, valves, springs, brake shoes, cab controls—combine with multi-stage tampo-printed Dinorwic Quarry red livery to deliver a highly realistic appearance. The model is DCC-ready via a Next18 socket, pre-wired for an optional micro decoder, and SOUND FITTED versions include a Zimo MS590N18 decoder, speaker, and firebox lighting for authentic chuffs, whistles, and work-sounds. Each locomotive arrives with etched nameplates and works plates plus an accessory pack containing alternative couplings (chopper and hook-loop types), bufferbeam filler plates, and fire tools. Measuring 84 mm in length, this Era 2 model brings the storied history of Dinorwic’s Quarry Hunslets to life in exquisite detail.
