The Class 68 is a modern high-performance Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotive developed for Direct Rail Services (DRS), designed to handle both intermodal freight and fast passenger duties. Based on the Vossloh Eurolight platform and assembled initially in Spain—now by Stadler—the type features a 3,800 hp Caterpillar engine, top speed of 100 mph, and advanced traction control, making it one of the most versatile diesel locomotives on Britain’s network. Introduced in 2014, the fleet has grown from the original 15 units to 25 in active service, with further orders following strong performance. Locomotive 68026, finished in DRS plain blue, represents the workhorse image of the class, frequently seen on both container traffic and passenger work including services for Chiltern Railways and ScotRail. Dapol’s model is part of their Next Generation Diesel range and features a redesigned die-cast chassis with their smooth-running 5-pole iron-cored motor, delivering excellent slow-speed performance and reliable haulage. It includes all-wheel drive and pickup, directional lighting with independent control for both headlights and cab lighting, and override switches for DC users. The model is DCC-ready via a Next-18 socket, and sound-fitted versions include a Zimo decoder with authentic recordings. Other refinements include RP25 wheels, clip-fit body for easy decoder access, self-centring close couplings with NEM pockets, printed nameplates, and an accessory pack with etched plates and buffer beam details.
